Flying to one of the NYC airports would make more sense. Hartford is almost
on the Massachusetts border. In NYC there are buses available to go to DWG.
You might even connect with someone in the metro area to give you a ride via
car and hike with you for a ways on the AT.
While it is possible to get back to NYC for as little as $2.00 via subway or
$7.00 via the new Monorail to Jamaica and then connect with the E Train
(subway) to Port Authority, it is less of a hassle to grab a Taxi for $40.00 to Port
Authority (this is the most comfortable way). If it was me I would take the
Subway for $2.00 but I can get cheap sometimes. It does take a little more
effort to hook up with the A Train at Howard Beach station but it is one ride
with no changing to get to PA in NYC. But, it is your choice.
One of these days I will get a bus to DWG and hike north to Greenwood Lake or
Harriman Park and take a bus back to the city, but not today.
