Shelly,

I agree with Hotdog, it's a personal choice.  I've never used them, so
didn't buy them for my hike, and still don't own any or plan on getting any.
I never had a problem with "stuff" in my shoes.  I DID have mud-streaked
calves, but I just chalked that up to part of the experience; the same as
stinky clothes, greasy hair, sweaty backpack, etc.
