I wondered about Simon not checking on Joe, too. He did say that he looked over into that area and saw the ledge that Joe was hanging from. Not much was said about looking to see where Joe fell.

The other interesting part is Joe's feelings about Simon's cutting the rope. Complete forgiveness. He understands the serverity of Joe's situtation and has always said he did the right thing. Joe is still climbing mountains. Joe says he was permantly changed by the experience. He accepted death, but didn't want to die alone.  I think that Simon still climbs also, but I am not sure.

  In my mind, the critical question to examine is not the dramatic one of cutting the rope, but not ascertaining his partner's condition (dead/alive?) the next morning. I had to wonder why he didn't go down to see, since he passed by the crevasse.

  Consider this;  if the rope had not been cut the two of them would probably still be where they were when the rope was cut:  one swinging on a rope and the other stuck in place holding onto an ever increasing weight of rope and rider.  When the rope was cut it enabled the hanger on to land on a ledge -- there to find courage enough to think about his choices.
