if you are not into the clothing thing and still want to avoid DEET
 I have had good luck with "natrapel" it is worth a try.

natrapel is a brand of deet free bug repellent. the package says it
contains:
ACTIVE!
Citronella
Lauryl sulfate
Potasssium sorbate
SEDENTARY!
Water
Citric acid
Xantham Gum

I first used a similar ingredient mixture when I found it mixed into a sun
tan lotion at CVS, Giant Foods or some such place. it was sun tan lotion and
bug repellent in one cream. it worked wonderfully and the returning bugs was
a good reminder to re apply suntan lotion.  but the SPF of the sunscreen was
junk. so I was putting on a good sunscreen and this "other" sun screen to
repel bugs.

I found some company that made this stuff separate from lotion but had
trouble finding it. low and behold REI sold it!

I have used it on my clothing(synthetic and natural) and skin with very very
good luck. when you put it on you smell like a picnic! haha. it smells like
those candles people burn to keep bugs away but stronger. I put some on my
pack top a few weeks ago and it still smells faintly of it and seems to
repel bugs.

I filled out the survey and they sent me a free package of random stuff (I
think I won a $25 dollar sample kit of assorted weird stuff. and boy oh boy
do I mean weird. It contains things like natrapel, DEET, super "sticky" hand
goo for what I assume is catching footballs and a after bite rub to prevent
bug bites from itching, other assorted even crazier stuff!

as for "sticky hand goo"! it promises not to be a sticky hand goo but to be
"dry hands" how does one increase "grip" without making something sticky? so
I will call it sticky hand goo! anyone need to catch footballs!?!?... I
still don't know why I would want my hands to be sticky. in my future I can
see mastering the super secret sticky hand lazy dog walking technique? maybe
even becoming future time trial popcorn eating champion? soap bar passing
master. banana peel specialist. who knows what new and wonderful things I
will accomplish with my sticky hands! will I even become a better keyboard
operator... I doubt.
