I recall a Canadian documentary about Walmart.

Regarding decline of small cities and towns

In the past, Walmart set up shop at the edge of town, leading to the decline  and in 
some cases complete destruction of the downtown. Years later they decided 
to close the local walmarts and opened large regional ones much further 
away, thus leaving the towns without many of the services they once 
had.


Regarding Walmart`s effect on US economy and jobs.

Walmarts contracts with suppliers, require that suppliers drop their price 
by 5% every year. In order to keep their contracts, more and more 
suppliers are now going overseas to have manufacturing done. This has 
significant impact on the US economy because Walmart now accounts for 20 % of 
all retail sales in USA.
