Speaking of Railway Express, I know a lady in her 90s who has lived her entire life in Evansville, IN, except when she went to Wellesley College.  For four years, she would ship her dirty laundry home on the train.  Her mother and the maid would wash, starch, and iron all the clothes, put them back in the trunk with a little happy in top, and ship them back on the train.  They each did this procedure every week of the school year.  Amazing!  This was not uncommon in that day and time.
