[at-l] revocation of a permit for a rock quarry near the AT

Mark Nickerson celebrates the Rock Quarry victory
(there are still other appeals avenues available) and
wonders if we do enough for other environmental
causes.

Well, NC is important as another precident regarding
viewscape and noise abatement issues for the AT. The
AT is the resource that makes such protection possible
for the neighbors and guests of the land in that area.
Other areas are not protected, which you enjoy each
time you drive your car down the highway across a
gravel enhanced surface.

There are other battles to be fought regarding AT
viewscape and noise. The race track in PA and proposed
windmills along several ridges are important. There
are several areas in which industry and utilities
encroach the AT. NJ has several. Georgia had to move
the terminus from Oglethorpe to Springer due to
chicken farms - before Federal protection was
available.

Victory has many fathers. There are many who question
whether private land use rights are violated by such
victories - or whether this is similar to complaining
about noise two weeks after moving next to an airport.
The quarry owner and the NC licensing authority should
have done due diligence regarding the planned quarry
and its impact on other interested parties.

So Mark is correct that we don't do enough for other
impacted areas, but this is an AT list.
