Leslie,
Reference your post, dated 3-30-04, quoting U.S. President Calvin Coolidge
admonishing to ?Press on!?
There was a time when a myth widely prevailed that the earth was flat, and
that sea monsters existed in the deep ocean. Unlike current space travel,
with earth controllers determining whether and when spacecraft abort their
missions, ship captains had the ability to turn back. Ocean sailing was
along the coastline. Sight of land was lost only temporarily, regained, and
the course corrected.
The phraseology of this quotation isn?t particularly memorable, but the
speaker was actually there, uncertain, and deep within it at the time. Many
among his crews wanted to turn back; mutiny was a real fear. It was his own
product, not the work of some hired hack. It is within the log kept by
Christopher Columbus during his first voyage, discovering the new world.
I don?t recall it exactly, but it is something like: ?Sailed for weeks
without sight of land. Sailed on.?
Steve
