Yep.  It works in my experience.  Of course, you have to know how to answer
somebody when they ask you, "Why do you need such a big knife?"

Various favorites include:

"Because the voices tell me so."

and

"It is in accordance with the prophecy."

Once you say stuff like that, normal people, and even total whacks will
usually leave you alone.
