There are many reminders of the busy world we leave behind when we travel the
trail. We hear the highway noise in places, people bring tape and CD players
and radios. Others use computers or a device to send emails. Some use cell
phones.

I do not like cell phone usage when it intrudes upon another's quietude. I
don't like it when I am walking down a city street and I don't like it on a bus
or a train. However, I do see a value in having a cell phone for
emergencies. And, I like the opportunity to call friends and loved ones during my hike.
I would like to think that I can be circumspect in my usage of my cell phone
so that I do not intrude upon the solitude of others. I would not use it in a
Shelter/Lean-to or in anyplace where others might be disturbed. It all comes
down to being aware of one's surroundings and being respectful of those who
seek a unique experience.
