Being so new, maybe I'm weighing in here where I shouldn't.. but here
goes anyway.  

I am going to carry my cell phone on my hike.  I agree that using it
during the hike for innane conversation would be rude and disruptive, so
it's going to be off 95% of the time I have it.  BUT... with all the
misgivings my family has about this trip, I know that if I don't check
in at least once a week (probably during one of my town trips to get
food) there will be stormtroopers out searching the AT for my poor
misguided body very quickly.  I think that would be much more disruptive
than my one little cell phone.

Pocketmail is a service. The devices that work with that service are
made a 
number of manufacturers. Enter "Pocketmail" in the serch field of 
<www.froogle.com> and you will find them aplenty.
