The STATE of Vermont
Vermont declared itself an independent Republic prior to
Statehood: however its territory was claimed by the State of New York; only
when New York was induced to renounce its claim in exchange for financial
remuneration was Statehood possible
Admitted to the Union as a State: 4 March 1791 by an Act of
Congress of 18 February 1791 recognizing a State government already formed
         The 14th state.

The area that is now Vermont was once part of New Hampshire and New York.
My Great-great grandfather claimed birth in NH but came to NNY as part of
the Vermont militia during the War of 1812.

As for editing the guidebooks... I doubt their "secession" will succeed.
I'm pretty sure that the guidebooks are safe.
