thinking only about the end-goal. It can frustrating to have
several hundred miles under your boots and realize that you
still have a lonnnng way (and months of hiking) to go. Focusing
most of your attention on your goal for the next week or two
gives you many small successess and makes the journal seem less
like an over-whelming task. Try to find something in the next 5
to 10 days of hiking that you're looking forward to. I think
it's best if you're looking forward to some aspect of hiking
(e.g. "I get to see a exposed bald!"), rather than only looking
forward to the next town stop, but some people have found the
latter enough to keep pulling themselves up the trail.

Any other folks care to expand or disagree with any of this?

I totally agree.
Except for that part about Liteshoe.... She whines like everyone else does...
LOL!

#3 above. IMPORTANT!
I never looked farther ahead than my next resupply (well, until the Whites &
Maine).
Stay focused on the here & now. Not the end of the hike. keep you head in the
hike.
Not ahead, not at home on relationship or home issues..
