"In a widely published 1998 article about Earl Shaffer, who hiked the 
Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine three times, Ellerbee started 
out by writing that she always wondered where Shaffer went for his 
Thanksgiving dinners.

She long had admired the hiker and then met him that year while hiking 
near her home in Massachusetts. He was 79 at the time.

The York Springs man died two years ago, but his 77-year-old brother 
answered the Thanksgiving question after Ellerbee's lecture at Anita 
Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium.

"He was at our house," he said, laughing.
