t. inquires "Does anyone know anyone that has apnea and carries one of
those breathing devices? Or are you just so tired after a days hike you
don't care? I would think a good nights rest would be beneficial no matter
what you are
attempting? not to mention the lack of snoring?"
I doubt anyone carries a CPAP machine, given the lack of electricity in
shelters and tents. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs from collapse of airway,
much like someone placing a pillow over your face several times an hour.
The victim is too fatigued to arouse completely. The sound of snoring is
the sound of the airway either being regained or beginning to collapse. The
silence is the sound of increased risk of sudden death.
I do know of hikers with this who managed to scare the bejesus out of their
shelter mates.
If you are a hiker with sleep apnea, strongly consider an ENT consult to
open your airway. Painful and nasty surgery, indeed, but potentially
lifesaving.
