Another good resource is the pamphlet:
_Trail Construction and Maintenance Notebook_ , published by the USFS.
The copy (which I have in hand) is the Feb. 1999 revision (of the Oct 1996
original), however I believe it has been revised again since then. This
copy has two #s on it, which might help id it, if you are talking to someone
at the FS -- 962-2833-MTDC (on the cover) & 4E42A25 (inside).
Its about 4 x 7 1/2.
At one time the FS would give one to anyone in a maintaining club, or work
as a direct volunteer. You may still be able to get them free, or cheaply.
Still another is the book:
_Appalachian Trail Design, Construction, and Maintenance_, published by the
ATC.
Its id is ISBN 0 - 917953 - 72 - x.

There is no one definition of Trail Maintenance. Maintenance standards
depend on
the use a trail gets and the desires of the managing agency. The best guide
for
the Appalachian Trail is the "Appalachian Trail Fieldbook" that was revised
and
reissued last year.
