I found a lot of things that I carried over from the hike that are still
with me today. If it's getting to be bedtime and I realize I haven't had
a shower today, I just climb into bed. If I drop food on the floor, I
follow the "3 second rule#, i.e., "If you pick it up within 3 seconds it's
ok to eat it." I brushed my teeth twice a day on the trail and still do
that. If my jeans aren't too dirty, I don't throw them in the wash just
because they've been worn. If I see a bug in the house I usually scoop it
up on a piece of paper and throw it outside. (Spiders can stay.)
To respond to the post regarding keeping up with the news while hiking, I
found this to be one of the best things about it - not knowing what was
happening and really not caring. I was setting up my tent one evening and
overheard a thru hiker talking to a week-end hiker. The thru asked "So
what's happening in the stock market?" It seemed so out of place in the
cathedral of the trees.
