Leslie,
Reference your email, dated 1-29-04.
You speculate, ?The important points here are that these people want to get
into the casino business, and being recognized as a tribe allows that, and
the fact that a section of the AT runs through their land.?
You ask, ?Will we have to move? Do we want to hike next to a casino??
Let?s pretend you believe you own land. The land you believe you own is
controlled by someone else. This other (?wrongful?) party decides to use
the land in certain manner(s). You regain ownership - - custody and control
- - of your land. I don?t know any of the facts in this matter, but, let?s
further pretend you?re poor, you?ve been poor a long time, and you?ve been
ridiculed for being different. You now have the opportunity - - people are
bringing gifts and promising riches - - to become suddenly wealth seemingly
without any effort. Will you feel obligated to continue any of the
agreements reached by the illegitimate party? [I ask this quite aside from
whether there is any legal obligation.]
Steve
