72* standing air temperature here in bright sunshine. 76* radiant
sun temperature. So nice on a daily basis it almost gets boring. Our grapefruits
are ripe. I squeeze fresh grapefruit juice and add 1/3 store bought Ocean
Spray grapefruit/tangerine to bring up the sugar content, since our homegrown
grapefruit is about 80% the sugar quality of the best store bought.
I took a 5 mile walk under the stars last night and had plenty of deep
thinking time without tripping or rushing. Something was blooming a very
pungent flower smell. Since we are 14 degrees further south than New York, our
daytime sun is noticeably warmer than the daytime winter sun in NY. This is best
noticed at sunset...
I recently ventured out into a preservation tract adjacent to our
neighborhood. It abuts a 50 acre public sanctuary, adding over 250 more acres.
Last summer they removed all exotic vegetation, opening it up into a vast open
area with scattered plants and shallow ponds. The previous vegetation was a
thicket of tree-like bushes. The new growth is restored cordgrass flats and
native bushes and palms. Nobody walks it and I found it a prize wild area next to
my home. The most interesting thing was the first growth semi-tropical weeds.
One looked like a bottle tree. A pair of Ospreys built a nest high in a cell
phone tower amongst the repeaters. A lone alligator sunned himself on a bare
sand flat left by the restoration bulldozers. The town left several park benches
made of new plastic boards way out in the middle of nowhere. I thought I saw
an otter's head duck underwater in a stream next to one...
