Tim wonders if the road through New Found Gap is
closed for the season, preventing jumping back into
the Smokies for a mid-winter stroll.

US 441 usually isn't ever closed except during
terrible storms. The road from NFG to Clingman's Dome
may be closed from time to time. 

It shouldn't be too hard to arrange a shuttle from
Gatlinburg (good gear shop) or Cherokee (good gambling
casinos) up to the Gap. After my March 4, 2001 hike up
there in blizzard, I'd encourage you to pack snow
shoes, at least to Fontana, and crampons the rest of
the way.

The quiet cold clear days after heavy snow are a fine
reward after the terror of awakening with frozen mice
next to your face.
