In Gulf Hagas itself there is no camping, of course.
In the Gulf Hagas Area there are 50+ campsites run by the KI/Jo Mary Forest.
After fording the Pleasant River, the AT goes left to the Hermitage, and the
blue blaze into the camping area goes right. Access to these campsites by car
is via a road a few miles east of where the AT crosses the KI Road. (The road
to Little Lyford is four or five miles west of the AT crossing.)
The Hermitage, High Bridge, and Hay Brook camping areas directly adjacent to
the AT and Gulf Hagas are very popular at just $6/person per night. Certain
van supported AT hikes make use of these spots. But as they are primarily car
camping sites, needing registration at distant gate houses, I don't include them
in the ALDHA Companion.
There's also some very nice free tent sites on the AT just north of the Gulf
Hagas, but you need to watch for ground nesting hornets.
The AMC will take over these Gulf Hagas Area campgrounds and the access road
gate houses, improving them to a degree suitable for their clientele. The
KI/Greenville Road is rather good, with passenger cars and logging trucks on it
from springtime to late fall, but will be paved to save the paint jobs on those
out of state Mercedes SUVs.
The AMC has been planning the purchase for quite some time, only a bumpkin
would believe they had no plans in mind for the land once they bought it.
