I agree with Lee.  I have been using the Mini-Works for quite some time, and
the ceramic cartridge shows very little wear.  Just make sure you use the
little pre-filter and keep it cleaned out - it will help keep getting some
of the larger grit into the unit.  And don't use a real abrasive pad to
clean the cartridge - use the one that comes with the device.

As Lee mentions, you can disassemble the pump while on the trail for full
cleaning.  Use a little Vaseline on the o-rings and pump to help keep the
pumping easy and the wear to a minimum.

And LiteShoe had a good tip - if the weather is freezing, make sure you
completely empty out the pump so that it will not burst from ice forming - I
haven't been in that kind of weather for an extensive amount of time, so
have not experienced this first hand, but it makes sense...

The MSR Mini-Works Filter will last the ENTIRE Appalachian Trail. It is the
only filter that is truly field maintainable and can be cleaned in the field
without any special tools (other than a 3M pot scrubby).

Once I knew where I was going, but now I have  forgotten.  Sometimes my mind
wanders.  Sometimes it goes alone, and other times it takes me along...this
isn't one of those times...
