[at-l] Baker? Katahdin?

>The cabins that Weary claims aren't there are on Compass Pond (super view of
>Katahdin) on the Golden Road east of Abol Bridge, on Sunday Pond (amazing view
>of Katahdin) off the Baxter Park road just south of the entrance, and the two
>on Pitman Mnt (marvelous views of Katahdin, better from the one higher up),
>both within one mile of the Hurd Brook Lean-to. $82/night, sleeps 6, gas heat,
>stove, and privy.

1) Compass Pond: map: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=19&n=5073519.00015624&e=502611.999999999&datum=nad83
(Lean-to is where the brook flowing into Hurd Pond crosses the AT. Compass Pond is labeled, 5 miles SE of the Lean-to)

Compass Pond is 5 miles as the crow flies and 7.5 miles on foot (3 miles on AT and 4.5 miles on the Golden Road) from Hurd Pond Lean-to.

2) Sunday Pond: map http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=19&n=5073956.00015628&e=504100.999999999&datum=nad83
(Sunday Pond is that little pond across the Millinocket Road from Compass Pond)

Sunday Pond is 6 miles as the crow flies and 8 miles on foot (3 miles on the AT and 5 miles on the Park Road/Millinocket Road) from Hurd Pond Lean-to.

3) Pitman Mountain cabins: map: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=19&n=5074950&e=497062&s=200&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG100
(Cabins are on a woods road up from the Golden Road, near the top of Pitman Mtn which is the unnamed mountain just NE of Little Hurd Pond)

These cabins are 1.5 miles as the crow flies and 6 miles on foot (via AT and Golden Road), unless you decide to bushwhack!

All 3 of these areas appear to be within the Nature Conservancy Land (looking at the published large scale map), and, at least for me, these would be quite a hike from Hurd Pond Lean-to. Disclosure: I am not privy to any agreements that may exist bvetween TNC and IP or the AMC.
