[at-l] AMC & the 100 Mile so-called Wilderness

Sly, this is not a takeover of the corridor by the AMC.  MATC will still be the local managers of the AT in Maine.  In the ATC announcement of this purchase, the following text can be found;

"....AMC has committed to working with ATC and the Maine Appalachian Trail Club in developing those parts of the management plan that would affect Appalachian Trail resources. It specifically noted it hopes to reduce overuse of some parts of the A.T. while addressing the ecological and economic needs of the Maine Woods...."

Concerning the wilderness attributes of this area, here is what the ATC has to say;

"News accounts of the AMC transaction referred to the Baxter-Monson area by its anecdotal "100-mile wilderness" moniker, although it is a long-time commercial forestry region — "wilderness" mostly to the extent that the only roads crossing the townless Trail there are unpaved timber haul roads."
