[at-l] The Great Pole Tip Test

>"...since the Class of 2003 did NOT use their poles "so equipped" - and their

>alone refutes your arguments."

You're right Jimmy, I'm probably biased. Accepting for the moment at least your
premise that pointy poles are virtually harmless to trail soils, I'm positive
that my one inch crutch tip is even more harmless.

However, if you can find a soils scientist that specializes in erosion matters
who believes otherwise I'd love to hear the arguments. I've done diligent
searches on Google for the slightest evidence of your contention that pointed
poles and lug soles on boots do no more harm than blunt poles and smooth soles.
So far I've found none.

Rather the scientific research seems rather overwhelming. Loose soil is more apt
to erode than undisturbed soils.

I haven't done a before and after test on my hiking staff. But I do test the
soles of boots every so often. If I use a new pair of boots while working
outside I track more dirt into the house than when I wear boots with worn out
treads. YMMV
