Wench,
Reference your post, dated 11-21-03, asking “Any of you know about the zoo
or wildlife park or whatever it is near Front Royal?”
The National Zoo's Conservation and Research Center is normally closed to
the public. It was a U.S. Cavalry Remount Depot, and now has the mission of
saving wildlife, protecting habitats, and restoring species to the wild.
The Autumn Conservation Festival is an annual event - - October 4 & 5, this
year. Reservations are required. Non-members may attend the Festival by
purchasing a parking pass for $30 per car, with a maximum of six people per
car.
You can see the facility, and the staff will take you behind-the-scenes at
the veterinary hospital and reproductive science laboratories. The bird
house displays rare tropical birds. Keepers are on hand at the hoofstock
pastures which contain some of the larger animals; Mongolian wild horse,
maned wolves, scimitar-horned oryx, and Burmese brow-antlered deer.
