I never said it wasn't practical to carry maps, I said it was impractical to
carry all the info to identify everything on the trail.
I also said it "if money is an issue" you can get by fine without them. Now
when it comes to emergencies my feeling is it's best to make it to the next,
of many, road crossing referring to the databook, then it would be to bushwhack
down a ridge in the middle of no where in hopes to find an out. Also, many,
if not all, the foul weather routes and blue blazes are noted in Wingfoot's
guide so a map would be needed there either. With dead reckoning it's easy
enough to figure out where you are on the trail in relationship to shelters or
roads, thereby placing yourself on the trail for all practical purposes.
