Ovoka Farm Acres Transferred to A.T. Corridor
U.S. Rep. Frank R. Wolf of Virginia is joining representatives of the
National Park Service, the Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC), and the Appalachian
Trail Conference (ATC) today to celebrate the transfer to the Appalachian
Trail corridor of 445 acres of the Ovoka Farm after more than a decade's work by
the several parties. That will allow relocation of the Trail from a heavily
forested route to the Piedmont ridgeline near Ashby Gap (U.S. 50), bringing in
new views of the valley's farms and forests from open fields. The breakthroughs
in acquiring that portion of the 1,490-acre farm began in 1998, when the new
owner initiated ATC-backed talks with the PEC, which bought or optioned the
property in December 2000 with funds from private donors. Wolf shepherded
legislation to fund NPS' purchase of the Trail portion through the House
Appropriations Committee, with ATC support and work on the terms of land's use.
