Hurricane Isabel Cleanup Continues
Thanks to the hard work of volunteer Trail maintainers and park staff, most
of the storm-damaged A.T. from central Virginia north through Maryland A.T. is
now open. A one-mile section of the Trail south of the James River in central
Virginia remains closed. Please be aware that, even where the Trail is open,
hikers may encounter numerous downed trees and other damage. Shenandoah
National Park has reported an average of 17 blowdowns per mile along the A.T. in the
central district of the park, and hikers have reported taking one-and-a-half
hours to traverse a particularly hard-hit one mile stretch of Trail in northern
Virgnia. Use caution when hiking in storm-affected areas, and check <A HREF="http://www.appalachiantrail.org/hike/updates/isabel.html";>Hurricane
Isabel updates</A> for details on current conditions and closures.
