My back porch is screened-in like a blind overlooking a pond. Just a
minute ago while reading AT-L a large mature bald eagle swooped not 10 feet
from my screen and landed in the backyard for a drink out of the pond. My jaw
dropped! Its wingspan was at least 7 feet. 2 red shouldered hawks mobbed it,
screeching out in protest. Eventually they won back their territory and the
ruling guest flew off after a 5 minute drink and look-see.
One of the best sightings ever down here...
Yesterday I was lucky enough to see the swamps in the Panhandle and
Big Bend area of Florida on a drive. I stepped out at the Florida Trail
crossing at Auchilla Forest and walked down a 100 yards of the path to get a feel.
Looks like a good recommendation for those from the north who have never seen
semi-tropical woods and wetlands. I was amazed at the long stretches of unbroken
wilds up there. I also saw the new inroads of major developments planned by
the paper company -but that is another topic for now...
