I can't speak for all the AT -- haven't hiked it all. Also, I tend to play
mine more when I stop than while walking, so my observations are spot check
non-random samples.
However, much of Damascus to Water Gap [and those parts of the TN/NC which I
have hiked] have good reception -- including a good amount of NPR.
Occasionally, you drop down off a ridge and lose all reception, but
generally when you lose one station you can dial in another. Once and a
while I'd stop, or tent, below a ridge where I got nothing.
I have used both digital and analog tuning radios. The analog ones seemed
to lose the stations more quickly than the digital ones -- or it seemed that
way. Never had two along to make side-by-side test, but it seemed that way.

I know in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont there is no problem
picking up either. Is this the case for the entire AT?
