[at-l] Bad ankles, and tight laces vs. loose laces

This question was buried in a too-long trip report from Wednesday (sorry
about that, I had NO idea it was that long until it showed up in my inbox),
so I'll ask again.
The "trail" I was on last Wednesday wasn't much of a trail but rather miles
and miles of ankle-turning rocks. I had my NB 804s very loosely laced
because they're a bit snug with two pairs of socks and because it was going
to be nearly 100F byt the time I finished the trail.
Because the laces were so loose, when the rocks wrenched my ankles (which
they did in EVERY conceivable direction with EVERY step for SEVEN MILES -
augh!) the shoe twisted and didn't take my ankle with it because there was
enough room for my ankle to stay upright within the shoe while the shoe
twisted instead, sparing me countless ankle sprains. Does that make sense?
Has anyone else experienced this? Doesn't that go against conventional
wisdom about ankle support?
