[at-l] RE: How hot the water?



I agree with you, Sparky. Sure, a filter adds some weight to your pack. But
I just don't like the taste of iodine, nor do I like to wait for it to kill
cooties. Neutralizers don't seem to help much, to me.

As for boiling, I haven't done the research myself, but a doctor friend of
mine who has spent a lot of time studying backcountry first aid tells me
simply bringing the water to a boil is enough. There's no value in letting
it boil a certain number of minutes, despite conventional wisdom to the
contrary.

As noted before, boiling will not remove many chemicals. Filtering can
remove some chemicals, I believe, but again I have not done research into
this.
