[at-l] drive/hike report #2

i aint getting at-l mails, even my own. kelly she said's cause my mailbox
got full when i's away, thus removing me from the list. til i come back, if
anyone wants to write me, please do but not as a list-er, which i temporarily am
not.

awakening to the continental breakfast, one of my favorite things. i offered
my shirt to a couple who said their son is involved with such shirts. it's a
weird surfer-shirt. THEY were wearing USMC shirts. into town, where the
cameraman said he'd send mine away for fixin. NO! we are on a long trip, and need
a camera NOW. so we bought a new one, with a 165mm zoom (the other was/is
170). i was offered 5 bucks for my broke one. NO WAY! my loyalty far exceeds
that am't. i hope to fix 170 real soon...

the inn-person mentioned a used book/CD store, so we checked that out, as
well as the architecture, signs, etc of dtn peekskill. really nice guy, and we
found some books and 2 obscure jazz CD's: anthony braxton and david
murray/james newton...

and onto the curvy, scenic road across the bear mountain bridge, the path of
thru-hikers, scene of an early dylan song, and a drive to its rocky summit. a
great overlook of the hudson and highlands from stony outcroppings, and (even
higher) from the tower. wow!

we crossed back, east to west, west to east, all the bridges along the
hudson. we stopped at hyde park, FDR's home. immediately we saw two human shapes
made from the berlin wall concrete. picture-posing in front of the main house, a
historian from arkansas
regaled us (i think he did. i am NOT looking any words up) with political
stories. he is even knowledgable about philly politics. he's a friend of, and is
enamored of, john ashcroft. i did NOT reveal my leftist political leanings.

where to stop? albany! what a change to drive through the downtown of that
city. it was jumpin! music everywhere, great, tall buildings.....who knew?

the motel-person said rooms are hard to find: the bar exam's being given. she
was juggling many calls, an argument with her boy-girl friend (on the phone).
i decided to be extra patient (not a virtue of mine) and kind (i often am
kind, but not invariably). got a smoking room, but not noticably so. and YES
free continental breakfast. and this too: walking out into the street, the
skyscrapers of albany are visible miles down the road, all alight...
