I believe that, in the case of the Bible, the various translations can be
copyright but the original (Hebrew and Aramaic text) is open. It is possible
that a few of the older translations are also fair game because of the length of
time that has passed since the original copyright.
Various translations of ancient works (Plato, etc.) are copyright. A
translator puts out a tremendous amount of work. Their efforts should be honored
and rewarded.
