The "wilderness's a piece of cake in September -- unless a hurricane comes
spinning up the coast, as Benedict Arnold learned in 1775 or there abouts, and
thousands have learned since.

 Every southbounder needs the set of maps from Appalachian Trail Conference,
which every long distance hiker should join.

  AMC hut information is available from www.outdoors.org but Carter Notch,
  Pinkham Notch, Lonesome Lake, and Zealand will certainly be open, probably on
  a caretaker basis. Caretaker basis means you bring in your own food, and cook
  your own meals using the hut facilities.

  There is no generic answer that would be useful for gear choices. It depends
  on how fast you plan on hiking, your budget, your desire for convenience, and
  how much you are willing and able to carry.
