[at-l] Weather

LOL! You just need to turn off the A/C and get used to it. BTW the heat
index already includes the humidity. It takes me about a week or two in
early summer to shift to summer mode. After that we hike in the mornings and
late afternoons just like they do in desert country. On the other hand you
are finding out why prime hiking season in Florida runs from October to
June. While the northerners are shivering in their cabins we can hike all we
want.

As for the 'skeeters, we found them to be much worse in Toulomne Meadows
this year, there were clouds of them all day long. Visible clouds. And in
the past we have seen much worse in the North Country. The only time I
really thought Florida 'skeeters were insufferable was when we visited my
wife's family out beyond Everglades City, at night, the population was awe
inspiring, truly horrific. But I lived in the Miami area as a kid and the
'skeeters there don't amount to much.

There is no where, except Hawaii, that has year round, weather friendly
hiking that I know of in the US.

I hate to bring this up again, but hiking in South Florida in summer is
miserable. Hike in the early morning or at dusk you say? Well, that's when
the mosquitos attack like US bombs in Iraq. No amount of DEET will deter
them. Also, there is the heat. Right now, at 7:10 a.m., It''s 80 degrees
with a heat index of 87. Add to that a humidity percentage of 84%.

Today's forecast for dusk is 91 degrees with a heat index of 101 degrees.
(And remember those mosquitos!)

At midnight tonight, the temperature is forecasted to be 84 degrees with a
heat index of 91 degrees and the humidity at 71 percent. At 4:00 a.m., the
forecast is 76 degrees with a heat index of 81 degrees, and 93 percent
humidity.

Also, take into account that this is based on the weather at the airport,
which is in eastern Broward County, and all the hiking to be done is inland,
where it is much worse, and this IS the rainy season, so all trails are
under water,

The bottom line? You cannot get any relief. None. It's like hiking in
the Amazon. Now, mind you, I like hiking, but only when it's somewhat
enjoyable. Winter, however, you can get the most enjoyable hiking done
imaginable. Keep in mind that it is easier to warm up than it is to cool
off.

Some people would say, "MOVE." Well, I love the boy, and he's here to
stay, and I love him more than hiking.

Anyway, I'm going to go check my lottery tickets for the 75 million
winning so that I may fly somewhere decent and hike. And get rid of the
icky green countertops. Wish me luck!
