I just received the reply below.  I have now gone out to the original paper
(which appears to have a staff larger than most shopper weeklies and more in
line with fair-sized dailies), and I have sent an email to the writer.  If
she replies, I'll let you know.

One reason that the story might not be showing up in a search is that paper
only has archives up until about June 2002.  Which is not unusual for
"serious" papers.  They delay adding "current" stories for several months to
a year.  Usually because they charge for searching and downloading the
stories.  Our local daily does the same thing.  Apparently they feel people
won't subscribe to the the print or online versions if they have too current
an archive for free.
