Kelly, Mike (Ke Kehawe sp?), who occasionally pops up here, hikes (or used
to) with a bamboo staff. He attached some kind of foam padding around the
top, possibly the kind you'd get for bicycle handlebars, and a wrist strap.
Most importantly he had a crutch tip on the bottom to keep the bamboo from
splitting. He swore by it and was getting a lot of mileage out of it, so
the idea certainly works...
