[at-l] RE: Group Hiking Query

>>There's been first-hand reports not only on this list but elsewhere about
troops that are totally clueless in the backcountry.

Fortunately most ill prepared Troops own mirrors. They only stay at
developed youth areas or Boy Scout Camps.

There are many creative solutions one may use in visiting the backcountry.
Two groups can backpack in opposite directions and exchange car keys in the
middle. This coming January we plan to send a group to the trail via canoe
or kayak. They stash the watercraft then head down the trail. The other
half of the Troop will be hiking up the same trail and will paddle back.
This way both groups will hike and paddle the same weekend AND not stay at
the same campsite together.

Question for the List, are Scout patrols or troops permitted or encouraged
to do trail maintenance. Is there training available for young people? By
14-15 a young person should be able to be some help. They might enjoy
installing water bars or building a foot bridge.
