[at-l] Group Hiking Query

To clarify, BSA limits crews departing Ely, MN to six youth, two adults and
an interpreter (guide)...most likely in four canoes. The Canadian put in
points permit slightly different numbers.

You may not have a choice. Some parks and wilderness areas put a limit on
group size. For example, groups in Great Smoky Mountain National Park are
limited to no more than eight. Several wilderness areas of the Rockies limit
group size too. If I remember right, the group limit for Boundary Waters
Canoe Area (Minn.) is nine people and four canoes.

Also, the type of group makes a difference. Is the church group a bunch of
inexperienced youth? Then I'd try to keep the group fairly small -- perhaps
no more than 15, and that includes 2-3 experienced leaders.

I am a lone turtle -- usually. Except for pick-ups for short periods. But
while talking about group hiking with a lady here, she said that she and her
husband were chaperoning a church group that would hiking part of the AT.
We got into a discussion about the maximum size of a group to hike together.
What is the suggested maximum size?
