[at-l] Alabama Pinhoti Trail Funding - Southern Extension to FL

I heard that Talladaga NF had some nice, albeit infrequently used trails,
would this be part of the route?

Subject: [at-l] Alabama Pinhoti Trail Funding - Southern Extension to FL

Good Morning,

>From Friday's Birmingham Business Journal. This funding looks to reduce
some road walking for those looking to hike from Key West to Katahdin.

To the north, I know the Pinhoti is now complete into Georgia. Does anyone
know the GA group's efforts in linking up with the AT by way of the Benton
Mackaye?

Take Care,

Tim

Department of Interior approves Alabama projects

The Department of Interior has approved several funding requests for
Alabama, according to U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R - Ala.

A total $3.3 million has been approved for acquisition of 10,000 acres of
forest lands in the Mobile Tensaw River Delta. The proposed purchase will
add to 54,000 acres that already have been secured in the area.

The Alabama National Forest will receive $1 million to purchase land from
willing sellers within its boundaries. The ANF represents the largest area
of publicly owned land in Alabama, covering approximately 666,000 acres.

Another $1 million will go toward the construction of the Pinhoti Trail,
which connects into Georgia. Shelby says the Pinhoti Trail could link to the
Florida trail at the Florida-Alabama state line in the Conecuh National
Forest.

The Alabama Rural Economic Action Program for Under-served Distressed
Counties will receive $500,000 to assist the forest industry in creating and
retaining jobs.
