Hello Everyone,
My family (me, my husband, and my 2 sons ages 8 and
4) hiked all weekend long at the Peaks of Otter in Virginia. We camped at the
Peaks of Otter campground. There are deer walking around everywhere there! I
just love watching them!
We hiked up Flat Top Trail, down Flat Top Mountain, back
up Flat Top, and back down Flat Top Mountain. We also hiked the Harkening Hill
Trail, the Johnson Farm Trail, Elk Run Trail, Fallingwater Cascades Trail,
Abbott Lake Trail, and lots of walking in between. A total of 21 miles our
family did this last weekend! It felt Great! The most we've ever did before was
around 8 miles in a day, so this was a challenge, especially for my 8 & 4 year
olds, they are Absolutely Amazing! The only Trail we didn't hit at the Peaks of
Otter this last weekend was Sharp Top Trail, but we had did that recently,
when we went there a couple of weeks ago. I can't wait to get out there and hike
some more!
We had met a thru-hiker going Southbound from Maine at the
Peaks of Otter Visitor Center. He got off the AT to take a much needed break!
Great guy, he went by the name Lone Wolf. A Commercial Fisherman up in Maine
by Trade. He also had a Rottweiler/Chow Mix dog with him, named Max, that was
very friendly as well. He had some problems during the 4th of July weekend
with his dog getting bit by a spider and had to go into town to see a vet. Lu
ckily the dog is fine now, $200.00 later. Anyway we offered him a ride into town
(Roanoke) to resupply. Then we drove him back to where he had left off at. He
gave us a lot of information about thru-hiking for my family's future
thru-hike! It was an Awesome weekend! I hope everyone else had a Great one too!
Hike for Life!
Shauna
