Alternative to pads (was) RE: [at-l] Thermarest Z-rest

Although it is anti-No Trace, some people still use pine straw and leaves.
Just get some clean leaves or straw. Make a pile and lay on them -- not
directly. Use a tarp, bag, etc. One person's suggestion, that I saw
elsewhere, was to carry a couple of extra garbage bags and stuff them with
leaves or straw. Use them for garbage later on and get new ones as you move
on down the yellow brick road. Either way, please random scatter the leaves
or straw when you are finished with. And don't dig sleeping holes.

One word of warning, use old dried-out leaves. And don't just grab a big
bundle -- for the occassinal tick or creepy crawler. Back when you had to
ditch tents and to dig sleeping holes, people would gather "handfuls" so as
not to grab up, say, a rattler.

I started my thru-hike with my Z-Rest. Before long I sent it home and
started using my RidgeRest. As my hike progressed I lost more and more of my
personal fat padding. Then I added my 3/4 length ultralite inflatable
thermarest and used it along with the RidgeRest. My point is that you will
learn to be flexible and let the trail teach you what you need to do. If I
were starting another thru-hike I would probably skip the Z-Rest altogether.
