Perhaps another reason for the spitting rule is the many who had a chaw a 
tabaccy in their cheek.  It got kinds messy at times and not only in the South.  
It was hard to sidestep the spittle at times.  Not that I am that old but of 
course, TB was something to be avoided as well.  Heck, even today it is 
disconcerting when someone "has to spit" when there are people around.  But imagine 
if the drool of tobbacky builds up to the point when it either comes out or 
goes down.  Now that is a disgusting thought!
