[at-l] Stuck in your head

On the AT, I got real grungy just before going into one trail town. Might
have been Helen. I was feeling mean and dirty. Then I hit a steady flow of
daytrippers in Yuppie Outdoor clothes heading the other way. I was in no
mood to answer too many questions -- I had a mild cold or sinus infection
coming on. Unfortunately I had this song stuck in my head. I was trying to
"whistle" it out since sometimes that helped to break the chain of thought.
Plus it was easier to join the "band-in-my-head" than to just "listen" to
it. I had to either hum or whistle it since it was an instrumental. So I
got to the point I was doing "dum-dee dum, dum, dum..." No-one bothered me.
Some even seemed to want to run the other way. ;-) It was the theme from
Deliverance. Wonder why no-one bothered me?

Plus I heard a Dr. Demento on the radio while in one town and got Napoleon
the 14th's big hit stuck in my head. And I went tripping down the yellow
brick trail singing it. "They're coming to take me away, Ha-ha. They're
coming to take me away, Hee-hee...." No trouble that day either. Actually
it's a favorite of mine.

I'm catching up on my journal reading, and got a kick out of Liteshoe
stating the fact that she had "I'm a Little Teapot" stuck in her mind, and
found it "infuriating." (Yes, I'm actually posting something ON TOPIC)

I do this too, especially when hiking or doing brainless tasks around the
house. I try my best to get the song out of my mind, think of something
different, force myself on to something else, and do quite fine until "This
is story about a man name Jed, poor mountaineer barely kept his family
fed.... " sneaks back in! It's always the theme songs to stupid TV shows.

I think this thread had been visited before, but I'd like to hear what
people actually DO to try to rid themselves of the song, and if it works or
not.
