Think Marine DI night hike.  Ever hike through swamp past junkyard dogs?
Run from some semi-ferral pigs?  That kind of night hike.  I think we
started at about 12 and got back about dawn.  Then I had to get b'fast
cooking and get ready for my merit badge exams, etc.

Your troop considered a night hike punishment? We were busy trying to get
the kids to stay in the tents. The snipe hunt generally worked on keeping
the younger ones inside. The older ones were a bit more trouble....
