Also try www.grisoft.com free antivirus - updates on your schedule. (ideally
you update before reading mail for the day) I find weekly updates
sufficient. The network worms come out of the blue with little warning. Few
normal users are effected by the worms - they go after servers. The viruses
are usually seen and included in the AV databases before they become rampant
so the timing is less critical.

Apply ALL the MS critcal updates (click on Windows Update on the Start
menu). Those on slow lines are SOL (many are 4-40 megabytes).

With MS critcal updates, AV and a firewall, Outlook is perfectly safe to
use. 

You don't need the anti-data-mining if you don't install software from
non-major companies, especial music sharing, etc. If you don't see how the
company makes money, it is most likely that they are selling info about you.
