[at-l] Trip Report: Vermont peaks near the AT

Friends

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week I was in Vermont and did a couple of day hikes up to peaks near the AT (near enough so they are on the AT maps - so this is on topic!).

The three peaks are all on the New England 100 Highest list, which are climbed by folks like me who enjoy climbing some of the less well known peaks (although obviously the well known peaks are on that list too - just higher up). 67 of these are 4000' or above and those are pretty well known. The rest are below 4000' and are the less well known, and less hiked peaks.

Tuesday we did Dorset Peak, about 10 miles north of Manchester, approximately due west of Bromley. This was a relatively easy hike (total of 6.8 miles hiked with 2580' of elevation gain) on a sunny day, mostly on old logging roads and one snowmobile trail. Dorset is # 99 on the list at 3770'. We saw no other hikers on the trail.

Wednesday we did Mendon Peak and Pico Peak which stand on either side of Killington very near to the trail. The weather was wet and the going was much tougher, including the 1.6 mile round-trip bushwhack to Mendon, through sometimes very thick brush. The day's totals were 16.1 miles hiked with 4600' of elevation gain. I was sure tired after that! At 3850', Mendon is # 85 and at 3957', Pico Peak is # 71 on the list. We saw one other hiker on the trail and he was doing a section of the LT.

Enjoy. Take a break from that other topic.
