[at-l] Sleeping Bags

That would be two sleeping bags.

The first would be a high quality down bag from Western
Mountaineering, Feathered Friends or similar. This will be your
most expensive purchase. It will compress very well. It will
have a very water resistant shell, while allowing vapor out. It
will last at least one lifetime.

The second will be an inexpensive fleece bag. It will cost about
$20 at Target or similar vendor. You could make one cheaper.

You will use the down bag in Georgia, NC, TN and send it home
sometime in Virginia. You will retrieve it as you approach
Vermont and discard the fleece bag. If you go cheap with the
down bag, you can use the fleece bag as a liner to extend the
temperature range.
